Why is it called an allotment and not just a garden?

It’s a good question.

A garden is probably connected to your house but an allotment is usually owned by and rented from the council for the purpose of growing veg. They hark back to a time when we didn’t have supermarkets with every good under the sun and so anything you can grow yourself was a welcome addition.
