I am in the middle of a recruitment and I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the motivation letters were written by ChatGPT...

Can you tell which ones?

The ones that lack heart...as you say below, writing is about thinking and I would add feeling.

Exactly, it would be interesting to do some experiments to see whether it’s good enough to fool a human into thinking it’s a human.

I’m not sure wits there...yet.

For now, as a tool it’s great and allows humans to add creativity and emotion.

Very interesting article, Martin. I've been experimenting with ChatGPT as well. I've used it to generate course outlines, which I'll write about soon, but for now the key message is that, as with your job description, it did the grunt work and gave me a starter for 10. It would have saved me a lot of time when I was writing course outlines last year. I also used it to generate a formula to use in Excel when I was having difficulty figuring out how to do something.

I tried an experiment whereby I asked ChatGPT to say what makes a good book review, then asked it to review two books, and then compared those book reviews to my own. The results were very interesting, and the comments even more so: https://open.substack.com/pub/terryfreedman/p/can-ai-write-decent-book-reviews?r=18suih&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

Ha, brilliant. Will take a look.

The thing its great for as you say is getting over that initial hurdle of a structure. Then, you can come in with some creativity. The two things together are really powerful.

Great essay! I'll just answer your last questions about where AI can go related to different work with my essay where I ask ChatGPT about Creativity and explore how creative, or not, we really are!

Oh, to add to the exam question. We already have this problem with Google and Reddit. In fact, prior to ChatGPT I was able to pull up all the answers to Amazon's coding questions. You can do the same with all of LinkedIn's 'skills certifications'

Very true. Id say the difference with ChatGPT is the prose that comes back is very powerful.

Not perfect but a step on from anything Google does.

100% agree. My point isn't that it isn't better, but that it isn't totally new or revolutionary.

Very true. It’s very much on a journey too. Not sure where exactly!

But I think we are going to find out

My reactions are very similar to Jani’s. I find your article really interesting and stimulating. On the other hand I share Jani’s concerns about where Ai programmes like ChatGTP are taking us.

Yes, indeed.

So much of writing is about thinking. Take away the need to write and you get people simply taking content and pasting it into Twitter or LinkedIn or using it as scripts on YouTube.

Writing should come from the heart.

Very interested article! I don't know much about ChatGPT and I have to learn more about it, but my first reaction is a bit mixed-feelings. I see its potential as a tool that will help us greatly, but at the same time it's a bit scary. You can tell that AI is getting better and better and it seems that it won't be long until it takes over the world - and that's a bit scary and conserning. What are you thought about this?

Yes, it worries me about what happens if it falls into the wrong hands.

To be honest, with all these things of this type the bigger picture points are out of our control so maybe there is no point worrying. There are so many potential upsides to what AI can do so I prefer to focus on those.

I’m really excited about the potential for pooling knowledge and then applying it to real world problems such as cancer research and other diseases.
